January 26, 2015

Richmond, VA – January 21, 2015 – Sportable is proud to announce that one of its newest youth athletes was recently named to the 2015 United States Paralympic Track & Field National team. Alexa Halko, a fourteen year old athlete, has been named among 42 other athletes with physical disabilities to the 2015 National team. Halko got her start in track in 2008 in Edmond, Oklahoma with the Greater Oklahoma Disabled Sports Association. Halko relocated to Williamsburg, VA and joined Sportable in September 2014. Since she joined Sportable, Halko has participated in Jr Wheelchair Basketball with the Sportable Spokes and plans to train with the Sportable Monument Ave 10k Training Team at their track workouts in conjunction with the Richmond Road Runners Club Advanced 10k Training program.

Halko will compete in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m events. She will compete nationally and internationally in the following competitions: Mt. SAC Relays in California, the Desert Challenge Games in Arizona, the US Paralympic Championships (location to be determined), the Parapan American Games in Toronto, Canada, and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Doha, Qatar. Her performance in these competitions will determine if she qualifies for the 2016 National Team and possibly be selected to represent Team USA in the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Under IPC Paralympic Records, Halko holds the Americas (North, South, Central) T34 records for 100m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m. She is currently ranked 4th in the world in her classification (T34) in the 100m and 800m.

Halko states, “I love to race, it gives me a way to go really fast. I can push myself to the limits in a racing chair! When I moved to Virginia, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. We found Sportable and they had all sorts of adaptive programs to choose from. Sportable has given me the opportunity to play sports, be part of a team and have fun doing it.”
