SPORTABLE WHEELCHAIR RUGBY PRESEASON
Mixed-Squad Scrimmages Featuring Four Teams Took Place in Richmond
RICHMOND, VA – (Wednesday, July 24, 2019) – Sportable was proud to host quad rugby scrimmages at Trinity Episcopal High School last Saturday, July 20. Nine active members of the Sportable quad rugby team were joined by athletes from the Raleigh Sidewinders, DC Punishers and Northern Virginia Mutiny to compete in four mixed-squad scrimmages.
The event was orchestrated by Sportable Program Manager Kyle Hitzelberg and Billy Newton, a member of the Raleigh Sidewinders. The goal of getting members of both teams together to play came to fruition on Saturday. Newton has been a strong supporter of the Sportable rugby program since its inception earlier this year and is a strong advocate for the game.
“It takes a lot of dedication and work,” said Newton. “Richmond definitely has a lot of great pieces, and if they continue to work hard and learn the game, they should do really well.”
Newton was also present when Sportable hosted Paralympic bronze medalist and 2012 US Quad Rugby Association Athlete of the year, Joe Delagrave, for a two-day intensive rugby clinic in June. Sportable will continue the partnership with the Sidewinders by traveling to Raleigh for scrimmages this fall.
Since Sportable established the first-ever adaptive rugby program in Central Virginia earlier this year, the team has seen rapid growth. With the support of the quad rugby community, the players have quickly adopted the sport and continue to improve in their understanding of the game.
The current 10-week rugby session kicked off Monday, July 22 at the Chester Family YMCA. Played by individuals ages 14 and over with an impairment in all four limbs such as SCI-quadriplegia, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy or amputations, wheelchair rugby in the United States is governed by the United States Quad Rugby Association (USQRA).
