I was 6 years old in 2005 when I went to my first Sportable activity, power soccer. Sportable was brand new and power soccer was the only sport that Sportable offered. There were just a few athletes there to play, and I was the youngest. I was excited and happy to have the chance to play a sport in my wheelchair with other athletes in wheelchairs.
Sportable Co-Founders Kristen and Jenni were able to provide me with a very small power wheelchair just so I would be able to play power soccer appropriately. Using a power wheelchair was new and different for me because I regularly used a manual wheelchair. The power wheelchair went fast and I loved going fast and scoring goals.
In Sportable’s first few years, I tried just about every sport and attended every clinic that Sportable offered. Some of my Sportable firsts and favorites were tennis, rock climbing, softball, basketball, bowling, racing in the Monument Avenue 10K and handcycling, where I made a friend who many years later is now one of my fellow Team USA Para Powerlifting teammates.
Over the years, Sportable has continued to grow, adding new sports while new athletes showed up. It has been a steady climb for Sportable. In the beginning, some activities had just a few athletes and volunteers, but as Sportable and I got older, we saw more and more athletes, volunteers and supporters get involved.
The growth of Sportable over the last 15 years has been incredible. Now in 2020, I see many examples of this incredible growth:
Sportable has come a long way in 15 years. I, too, have come a long way because I grew up with the ability to play sports because of Sportable. It’s had a huge impact on me and has helped me become the athlete I am today. I feel very lucky to be a part of the Sportable family, and I am extremely proud to be a Sportable athlete.
Thank you Sportable!
