Sportable Possums Capture First Win; Five Tournament Awards

The Sportable Possums concluded their inaugural wheelchair rugby season with the team’s first-ever win on February 15 when they took a 37-33 victory over the Carolina Crash at the Queen City Collision.

Established in January 2019, the Possums competed in five tournaments this season and traveled with 10 athletes (Ryan Beale, Josh Burch, Ryan Estrada, James Howard, Mandy Marchiano, Rachel Powell, Patrick Prophet, Josh Sloan, Josh Smith, Grace Swanner) and four support staff and coaches (Trevor Cheatham, Kyle Hitzelberg, Rachel Lovell, and Becky Russell).

Possum players claimed awards at each of the team’s five tournaments, including Grace Swanner who won the Sportsmanship Award at the team’s first tournament, Beast of the East. Josh Burch won the All-Tournament Team Mid-Pointer Award at both the Raleigh Rumble and the Capitol Clash. Mandy Marchiano won the Spirit Award at the Code of Honor Rugby Invitational and Rachel Powell took home the All-tournament Team High-Pointer Award at the Queen City Collision. Harriet, of course, won the Best Mascot of the Year Award at all tournaments.

The Possums’ competitive season has ended but practices will continue into the spring.
