Sportable Concludes Historic Tailgate Season

RICHMOND, VA – (Friday, October 8, 2021) – Sportable, Central Virginia’s premier adaptive sports club, proudly raised an unprecedented $170,000 through the historic 10th Anniversary Sportable Tailgate presented by Dominion Energy. Made possible by generous supporters who pledged $35,000 in matching challenges, as well as individual donors and corporate sponsors, the 10th Anniversary Sportable Tailgate has had a direct and immediate impact on individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments.

“We are blown away by the support from the RVA community and beyond as we smashed all of our organizational records with the largest Tailgate fundraiser in history,” commented Hunter Leemon, Sportable Executive Director. “To exceed all of our goals and raise more than $170,000 is truly a testament to the hard work and passion of our staff, Board, Associate Board, community partners, sponsors, and donors. The impact that the 10th Anniversary Sportable Tailgate will have on our mission to make sports accessible and inclusive is immense. This is an incredible way to commemorate a decade of Tailgates.”

Sportable celebrated 10 years of Tailgates this year with more than a dozen do-it-yourself events held throughout the region from September 17 through October 3. Events included a Sportable Athlete Tailgate presented by Hourigan, an Associate Board Oktoberfest, a cookout for patients and staff at Sheltering Arms Institute, neighborhood block parties, and a pop-up boot camp tailgate, before commemorating the first-ever Tailgate held in 2012 with a celebration at the home of some of Sportable’s most ardent supporters.

The campaign included a multi-tiered, peer-to-peer fundraiser that empowered and inspired supporters to become advocates for individuals with physical disabilities and to raise critical funds to support adaptive sports in Richmond. Funds raised by Tailgate hosts were matched one-to-one by anonymous donors and surpassed the organization’s original goal of $35,000. As Sportable’s largest fundraising event in the organization’s 16-year history, the 10th Anniversary Sportable Tailgate presented by Dominion Energy was generously supported by 280 individual donors and 19 corporate sponsors.

Sportable revenues are 97 percent philanthropic and funded almost entirely through donations and grants. Gifts of any amount provide critical unrestricted support and directly impact the lives of hundreds of individuals living with physical disabilities or visual impairments.
