First-Ever Sportable Stampede 5K Announced

RICHMOND, VA – (Thursday, April 8, 2021) – Sportable, Central Virginia’s premier adaptive sports club, is proud to announce the first-ever Sportable Stampede 5K, presented by Rybec Insurance, which will take place virtually throughout the month of May. All proceeds will have a direct and immediate impact on Sportable’s mission to make sports accessible and inclusive for individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments. Registration is available now at Sportable.org.

“We created this virtual opportunity in order to engage our entire community in an inclusive event that meets the interests and needs of every participant whether they are in it for the competition, recreation and/or to fundraise for Sportable’s adaptive sports programs,” said Hunter Leemon, Sportable Executive Director. “I am grateful for Rybec Insurance stepping up to be the lead sponsor of this new event.”

The Sportable Stampede 5K is fully inclusive as individuals of all abilities are encouraged to run, walk, or push any 3.1 mile course at any time during the month of May. The fee to participate is $35 and includes an official Sportable Stampede 5K performance shirt. Race results will be self-reported and top finishers in five categories – standing para athlete, wheelchair user with four limb impairment, wheelchair user with full arm function, blind or low vision, and able bodied – will receive special recognition.

The fundraising campaign, “Let’s 5k for $10k,” will include a multi-tiered, peer-to-peer fundraiser that will empower supporters to become advocates for individuals with physical disabilities and to raise critical funds to support adaptive sports in RVA. With a goal to raise $10,000 by May 31, 2021, the Sportable Stampede 5K Fundraisers are encouraged to engage individual networks with personalized appeals throughout the month of May. All donations will be matched dollar for dollar up to $10,000 through the generous support of Sportable athlete, Bill Sweeney and his wife Cynthia Schmitz.

“As a local small business owner and long-time Richmond resident, I know the value that Sportable provides to this community,” added Ryan Hickey, Rybec Insurance owner. “My team and I are proud to be the presenting sponsor of the inaugural Sportable Stampede 5k that will be open to participants of all abilities and provide an opportunity to get active while supporting a great organization.”

Sportable revenues are 97 percent philanthropic, funded almost entirely through donations and grants. Participation in the Sportable Stampede 5K will provide critical unrestricted support and will directly impact the lives of hundreds of local residents.
