In 2010, US Census report showed the following statistics for Richmond, Virginia.

  • Population aged 5-17 years old: 25,767

  • 9% are living with a Disability

  • Just under 5% of that (9%) have a physical or visual impairment

  • Population aged 18-64 years old: 140,060

  • 13% are living with a Disability

  • Roughly 10% of that  (13%) have a physical or visual impairment

Even more important than that is the fact that individuals with physical disabilities are 2.5 times more likely to be obese than able bodied individuals-increasing their risk for developing secondary complications such as diabetes, heart disease, and depression–regardless of age. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) 31% of children with disabilities report being sad, unhappy, and depressed preventing them from being active. Sports and recreation are proven to serve as a catalyst for change for individuals living with physical disabilities, decreasing isolation and providing access to social supports. Youth sports programs specifically contribute to the individual’s physical, social, emotional, cultural and educational growth and development.

Our full spectrum of services addresses the needs of athletes ranging in age from 5 years through adult and includes individuals with a variety of physical impairments, such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, amputations, visual impairment, cerebral palsy, etc. As physical disabilities can affect anyone – regardless of race, religion, age or sex – Sportable is proud to serve a broad spectrum of individuals, providing them with a unique opportunity to lead healthy, active lifestyles alongside the able bodied population.
